Bay of Fundy – St. Martins Sea Caves Cam
If you thought you were going to get a glimpse of a fascinating subterranean sea world, you’re wrong, so after viewing this live feed of St Martins sea caves, you may well feel slightly deceived. But as coastal views go, it’s quite scenic and gets more interesting if you exercise your grey cells trying to imagine what could be lurking inside those dark, tunnel-like openings which could be crabs, crabs and well, more crabs.
St Martins sea caves are a major attraction in a village of the same name, St Martins, in New Brunswick, Canada. The caves, and the village, line part of the Bay of Fundy which is famous in its own right for having one of the highest tidal ranges in the world. It’s those surging high tides, tides that can swell to reach around sixteen metres, that have worked their erosional magic and carved great big holes in the sandstone.
If you’re a budding spelunker checking out the caves in preparation for heading there to explore them, be warned. The tide turns more or less every six hours, or thereabouts, and when the waves roll in, the caves fill with water. It’s not a place you’d want to be when the tide is high unless you have gills and are named Aquaman. Make sure to go exploring at low tide, but don’t think about going to catch crabs. The caves have been designated a UNESCO GeoPark so they, and whatever resides inside them, are protected.
