Circus Maximus Webcam in Rome

This cam may well come as a bit of a let down if you were hoping to catch sight of some excitement under a big top. It’s, as you’ll undoubtedly notice, focused on something else entirely and there’s definitely no clowning about going on here. That said, back in its heyday, the Circus Maximus was a place of public entertainment albeit on many occasions a lot more gruesome than anything you’ll see in a circus today.

As with most constructions dating from the times of the Ancient Romans it now stands in partial ruins. The Romans may have been experts at building roads that seem to have lasted forever, but places like the Circus Maximus, and the Coliseum to name another, haven’t fared quite so well. Although that’s not to say they’re not still imposing in their present state. After it was completed the stadium seating tiers of the Circus Maximus were capable of accommodating over one-hundred and fifty bloodthirsty spectators. That’s a good few tens of thousands more people than even the largest football stadium in the world has capacity for today.

All you’ll hear at the Circus Maximus now is the roar of the passing traffic, well unless you get stuck behind a group of noisy tourists taking a guided tour that is. But it’s not hard to imagine what the roar of the crowds would have sounded like when the chariot races or gladiator fights were taking place. Thankfully the days of emperors giving the thumbs up sign to end the confrontation between fighters, frequently resulting in the death of one, are over. So there’s no qualms in giving the thumbs up to this beautiful historic building. May it stand, no matter what condition it’s in, for another millennia or two at least.
