Monument Square Tree Cams in Portland

While the folks who live in Portland may well deck their halls with boughs of holly for the Christmas holiday season, that’s not what the powers to be do with the trees in Monument Square. The trees that line the square and the annual festive pine addition get strung with numerous lights to make them look pretty. The rest of the year they’re back to plain old green, just as Mother Nature intended and our Lady of Victories once more gets everyone’s full attention. And so she should.

Our Lady of Victories is a bronze statue installed in the square in the late 19th century for the purpose of reminding folks of the thousands of Portland men who lost their lives during the Civil War. When the statue was commissioned, they didn’t hold back on expense and Our Lady of Victories is one of the biggest bronzes in the country. While she is fashioned after the Greek goddess, Nike, sadly the budget back in the day didn’t cover giving this version wings, but she’s just as impressive without them.

Depending on when you view these two cams you may get the impression that Monument Square is a peaceful spot to amble around while pondering life in general. Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn’t as the square hosts a variety of events throughout the year. Keep popping back and you may well spot a concert in progress or the Portland bookworms perusing the stalls at the yearly book festival.
