France has many picturesque towns, but one of the more attractive ones in the country’s Brittany region is this one, Vannes.

Vannes occupies part of the French coast where the Gulf of Morbihan has eaten its way inland and left the waters strewn with forty islets. The port area of Vannes is still the busiest part of the town and has been a trading port since the Middle Ages.

Vannes is proud of its long history and celebrates that connection with the past every year in a huge festival, the Vannes Historical Festival. For three full days the streets come to life with performers in medieval costumes, falconry displays and even the odd fire-eater or two.
