New Hamburg Yacht Club Near Wappingers Falls

You may well click on to view this live feed streaming from the New Hamburg Yacht Club and find the marina completely devoid of boats. It’s hard to be one hundred percent certain why that is. It could be down to the folks sailing off to enjoy the surrounding scenery and not coming back. Or it might be that folks are cutting back on expenses because they can’t afford the mooring fees. Or in fact, any other reason you can think of. When there’s no boats to see you’ll just have to make do with watching the waters of the Hudson River flowing by.

In the meantime, to stop you dozing off, you might be interested to know that this often boat-less yacht club is located in a hamlet, not surprisingly, called New Hamburg. It’s a hamlet with not many claims to fame other than a waterfall on nearby Wappinger Creek. While the creek itself can lay claim to being the longest in the county, the waterfall is not one that should not, in any way shape or form, be compared to Niagara Falls. This cascade tumbles down over a very spread-out, twenty-three metres in a very demure way rather than spilling from a great height.

While New Hamburg may not have made its mark on modern times, it does have quite an interesting history. In bygone times, think late 19th century, the hamlet actually served as a port for the local area and received shipping with cargos of timber and provisions. The yacht club was founded back then too, but for iceboating rather than conventional navigating under sail. That could be the answer to the conundrum of why there are no boats in the marina. Folks are just waiting for the river to freeze over. Come back when that happens and you’ll see a different picture because New Hamburg is one of the best places in New York state to go whizzing down the Hudson ice yachting on a boat with a sail and skis.
