La Concha Beach is one of the many attractions San Sebastian, a city located on the coast of the Bay of Biscay in the Basque region of northern Spain, has to offer. It isn’t a resort city with year-round sunbathing weather, but that doesn’t stop visitors flocking there when the balmy temperatures drop to anything from 5º to, on occasion, -8º or lower.

San Sebastian embraces the beginning of autumn by staging Spain’s largest film festival. And if that’s not enticement enough to make you pack a jacket instead of your suncream and swimsuit and catch a flight to San Sebastian, in September rather than July, then nothing is. Every year since 1955 the festival has presented movie magic created by some of the best Spanish and international directors of all time. For an entire week, the stars that shine in the night sky over San Sebastian are overshadowed by the stars walking the red carpets as they head to their premieres. Who needs a beach holiday and a suntan anyway? A tan fades, memories of a good movie don’t. And if they do, well, you can always watch it again.
