Carolabrücke (Bridge) Webcam in Dresden

Dresden is a city in Germany that’s renowned for its stunning Baroque architecture, the elaborately decorated porcelain first created in its suburbs which carries the same name and its impressive castles. One glance at the Carolabrücke, the bridge you can see on this webcam, and you may rapidly come to the conclusion that the architect who designed the bridge wasn’t inspired by any of the three city features previously mentioned. This bridge is, or rather was, about as plain as a bridge can get.

The current Carolabrücke, or Carola Bridge, spanned the River Elbe from 1971 until recently when part of it unfortunately collapsed. The part of the bridge that unexpectedly self-demolished carried the tracks for the local tramway as well as a cycle path and footpath for pedestrians. Thankfully, as the structure disintegrated at around three in the morning that section wasn’t in use so no injuries occurred.

Why the hundred-metre long section of the Carolabrücke gave up the ghost and decided to take a dip in the muddy waters of the Elbe has yet to be determined. And it could be a while before any investigations into its demise can continue or its restoration can begin as any work is being hampered by rising water levels. In its original state, the Carolabrücke’s functional design couldn’t compete with the rest of the city’s architecture, but it’s definitely eye-catching now. And, not surprisingly, rapidly becoming one of Dresden’s most photographed bridges.
