Tour around the fortress walls and stand atop the ramparts and look out over the English Channel – virtually, of course – and on a foggy day, it’s not hard to imagine pirate ships emerging from the mist.

Pirate attacks are a big part of Saint-Malo’s history and even with two more strongholds on nearby offshore islands, it was a city often under siege. That’s all changed nowadays and Saint-Malo welcomes its many visitors with open arms. Quite probably because they no longer arrive in pirate ships, but in hoards on the cross-channel ferry.
