Zenkōji Temple and Nagano Station Webcams

You don’t need to be overly observant to notice the stark contrast between these two live feeds being streamed from Nagano in Japan. While you probably don’t need it to be pointed out, one, the Zenkōji Temple, offers a view of an ancient haven of peace and tranquility while the other, the Nagano Station feed, shows the complete and utter chaos of modern industrial life.

Nangano Station is the main transport hub for Nagano, a city on Honshu Island that’s home to around three quarters of a million inhabitants. While its appearance on this webcam makes it look chaotic, like most things in Japan, it’s highly organised and it needs to be. The station, which has been operating since the late 19th century, has seven island platforms and more than a dozen tracks carrying passengers using the services of eight different rail companies. Not only does the station’s train and bus services cater for the city residents, but also the million plus visitors a year heading to the Zenkōji Temple.

Yes, you guessed it. With a million plus visitors a year, the Zenkōji Temple is not always as peaceful as you might expect. This 7th century-built Buddhist temple is a place of pilgrimage for those who follow the teachings of the awakened one. It houses a statue of Buddha which is reputed to have been the first of its kind introduced into Japan. The statue is only displayed on certain occasions, namely every six years, the next time being in 2026. When Buddha has been dusted off and put on show, guaranteed the number of visitors to the temple, and passing through Nagano Station on their way to see it, will increase five-fold.
