Rasnov Fortress Webcam in Transylvania

See the word, Transylvania, and the first thing that comes to most people’s mind is Count Dracula. If not that legendary, but fictional character, then Bran Castle which inspired Bram Stoker to create him. Scrap those thoughts because this webcam is focused on the Rasnov Fortress which, even though it may be shrouded by mist when you view this live feed making it look creepy, was historically a place of refuge rather than one that inspired nightmares.

The Rasnov Fortress was built sometime in the early 13th century on top of a hillside in the Transylvanian region of central Romania known as Brasov County. While it may not have the decorative turrets you might expect in a castle-like construction of that era, it’s impressive in its own right. The height and thickness of the fortress walls were what kept marauding armies out and the villagers from the surrounding areas as safe as was possible during turbulent medieval times.

Whether or not the current inhabitants of Rasnov, the once village overshadowed by the hilltop fortress which is now a town, would still be able to seek shelter there is debatable. The population of Rasnov has grown from a scattered rural minimum to over fifteen thousand so it’s highly unlikely they’d all fit inside those citadel walls should the need arise. Thankfully they won’t need to as the forces that attempted to dominate this scenic area of Romania are all defunct and no more than part of its past history.
