Oakland Bay Bridge Views in San Francisco

Join either of these two live feeds focused on the Oakland Bay Bridge at night and it looks as if a giant spider has spun a spindly, dewdrop-soaked web between the spans. Thankfully even California’s native breed of tarantula, while it’s a heavyweight of the bug world,  doesn’t grow quite big enough to do that. Join the feeds during daylight, and if you can take your eyes off the mesmerizing flow of traffic, you’ll probably agree that the bridge is as equally elegant when it’s not illuminated.

The two sections of the Oakland Bay Bridge stretch across San Francisco Bay for a total length of seven and a quarter kilometres. The two sections, east and west, are both connected to Yerba Buena Island. For the curious, yerba buena roughly translates from Spanish to English as good weed which may be a point to ponder on considering the statistics on the number of vehicles heading in that direction. Think in the region of a quarter of a million, and sometimes more, vehicles making the bay crossing on a daily basis. That’s a lot of wheels and a lot of toll fees.

When the bridge first opened in the mid-1930s crossing it in a westbound direction cost less than a dollar. These days that same trip will cost you over eight times as much unless you carpool with some work buddies and so are eligible for a fifty percent discount. Just because you’re paying for the pleasure of using the bridge doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed to get to work, or back home, in record time. Without running into a holdup, you might get from one end to the other in thirty minutes. If there’s congestion, well, sit back, turn your radio up and enjoy the views of the bay. They’re quite spectacular and will take your mind off thinking of an excuse why you’re late for work, or dinner, again.
