Hale Boggs Memorial Bridge Webcam

The width of the Mississippi River where it flows through St Charles Parish in Louisiana didn’t prove a deterrent to the local folks building a bridge across it. In fact, the bridge that was constructed to get from one side of the Big Muddy to the other turned out to be one of the longest bridges in the world.

The Hale Boggs Memorial Bridge is a three thousand, two-hundred and sixty odd metres long, cable-stayed structure that carries four traffic lanes forty-eight metres above the water. For one day in April every year the forty-thousand plus vehicles that use the bridge daily are halted and the five kilometre St Charles Bridge run takes place. Shame the cam is just a bit too far from the bridge to be able to watch the runners and walkers sweat as they make their way from the park on the east bank in Destrehan to the park on the west bank in Luling, but cheer them on anyway as they’re raising money for charity. All participants, even those who come in last, get a big thumbs up for that.
