Football, Rollerskiing & Views in Czarnorzecze

The one thing these three live feeds have in common is grass and lots of it. And where there’s lots of grass that needs to be kept in order, there will be a man with a ride-on mower. View any of the feeds during the daytime and you may well spot him whizzing around and leaving those acres of green stalks, whether they’re on the football pitch or on the rollerskiing track, in a meticulously shorn condition. Big thumbs up for a job well done.

This year-round sports facility is in the Polish village of Czarnorzecze which, as you can see on the Czarnorzecze View cam, is surrounded by even more verdant countryside. That countryside forms a part of the Czarnorzecze-Strzyżów Landscape Park, a hundred square miles of protected terrains below the slopes of the Beskid Mountains. It’s an area that’s perfect for winter sports when there’s snow on the ground, but when there’s not, well, it’s time to get your skates on.

From its invention way back in the 1930s as an off-season training method for skiers, rollerskiing has become a competitive sport in its own right. It’s a fast sport, so if you’re watching someone on these trails don’t blink or you might miss them zoom past. Not all rollerskiing is about speed though, it’s also about distance and duration so you may spot the same person going round several times. When there’s snow on the ground and the mower has been exchanged for a snow blower, the trails are used for cross country skiing which, it has to be said, at least from some folks point of view, is much more interesting to watch than football.
