Downtown May Pen Webcam

If you dropped by this live feed streaming from May Pen to check what’s happening over there, you’ll be pleased to see that this Jamaican city at least appears to have escaped the wrath of Hurricane Melissa. Watch for a while and you’ll come to the conclusion, life in May Pen is going on pretty much as normal. That can’t be said for towns and cities in other parts of the country. Let’s hope those affected are able to make a speedy recovery from the devastation inflicted by the category 5 tropical storm.

May Pen is a low-lying sprawl of a city around fifty kilometres west of the capital, Kingston. While superficially, from the views on this feed at least, it may not appear historical, but it was first settled in the late 17th century. From those early days, when it was a plantation-style cattle farm, the urbanisation has expanded to become the home of over sixty-thousand people. To this day, May Pen’s economy is based around agriculture although now it’s citrus crops rather than cows.

Watch as the cam pans around and you’ll get a glimpse of the century-old clocktower and all the folks rushing past it to get to the huge open market that’s held daily nearby. One thing guaranteed to be stacked on the market stalls is a citrus fruit that May Pen has become renowned for and that’s the tangelo. Also known as the ugli fruit, a tangelo is a cross between an orange and a grapefruit. Suck on a sour-tasting segment of one of those and it’ll certainly make your tastebuds sing. Juice it and you’ll get a refreshing drink with all the flavour of a tropical Jamaican treat. They make great marmalade too. And who doesn’t need some tangy Caribbean sunshine to spread on their toast in the morning?

NB: For anyone who’s into entertaining traffic cams, you’ll love this feed. There is no right of way on the roads in May Pen or at least that’s how it seems.
