King Street and Courthouse Webcams in Alexandria

View these live feeds during the night hours in Virginia and you may well start wondering if you’ve lost count of the months and Christmas is closer than you thought. Don’t worry, it’s not or at least not yet. They just like to adorn the city trees in Alexandria with strings of twinkling lights to make them look even prettier in the dark than nature intended. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

The city of Alexandria now occupies around forty square kilometres of terrain in the northeast of the state. That’s a much larger portion than the original plantation owner was granted to grow his tobacco plants on in the late 17th century. Just over six decades later the plantation that was established along the side of the Potomac River, where it flows into Chesapeake Bay, was founded as a city. It’s a city that’s now home to almost one-hundred and sixty thousand people so having a decent courthouse is not only a need, but a must.

The courthouse you’re viewing on this feed isn’t the first Alexandria had. The first opened its doors to dole out justice in 1872 and still stands on King Street, but now serves a very useful purpose as the City Hall. The courthouse you can see here is a more modern, five story structure the construction of which was completed in 1981. Although it doesn’t boast the spired clock tower of its predecessor, it’s still an  attractive building in its own right. To quote Huey Lewis and the words he once sang – it’s hip to be square.
