Martin is a town in the mountainous central region of Slovakia that is a haven of tranquillity during the warmer months that morphs into a hive of activity as soon as there’s a fall of snow. The firebreaks winding through the forest are used for hiking in the summer, but come winter they turn into downhill ski slopes that attract skiers in their hundreds. The only setback to the fun is there’s no ski lift and it’s a long, long way to go up just to be able to slide back down again.
