Mulberry Street Webcam in Little Italy, New York

Right in the heart of Manhattan’s Little Italy, this webcam looks down onto Mulberry Street, where there’s rarely a shortage of people wandering past, stopping for something to eat or simply taking in the neighbourhood. Restaurants spill out onto the pavement, delivery vans squeeze their way through and the steady stream of locals and visitors provides plenty of people-watching from a safely transatlantic distance.

Mulberry Street has been closely associated with New York’s Italian-American community since the great waves of Italian immigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Little Italy is rather smaller today than it once was, but this stretch remains packed with Italian restaurants, cafés and shops, surrounded by the unmistakable jumble of fire escapes and brick buildings of Lower Manhattan.

The camera sits above the Mulberry Street Cigar Shop and gets an especially good workout each September, when the Feast of San Gennaro takes over the neighbourhood with food stalls, processions, music and enormous crowds. The rest of the year is hardly dull either. This is New York, after all, so even watching somebody attempt to park can provide a few minutes’ entertainment.
