Falcon Webcams at the University of California, Berkeley

If you’re a serious falcon fancier then you won’t go short of falcon webcams to check out on this website. There’s quite a collection to browse through. Many of the on-cam nesting sites are located on famous historical buildings around the world or, like this one on the roof of the University of California, offer bird’s eye views of the surrounding countryside or urbanisation. If you decide to make a visit to these bird’s official website, Cal Falcons, don’t let what you read pull the wool, or in this case feathers, over your eyes.

While Peregrines are known to be the fastest creature on the planet and ones that can take out a pigeon in mid-flight at over three-hundred kilometres per hour, there are certain things they can’t do. Those certain things include setting up websites and typing. So while the text on the Cal Falcon website might lead you to believe it was created by the university’s falcons themselves, it wasn’t. It was done by some tech savvy alumni with a great sense of humour and obviously, a passion for peregrines.

Almost a decade ago, when falcons were spotted investigating the Campanile, one of the tallest clock and bell towers of its kind in the world, action was taken to provide them with an adequate nesting box. The first fledglings took flight from the tower’s lofty heights in 2017 and there’s been many more since. If you want to be around to see the next batch of eggs hatch and the young take flight, come back around the end of February and you’ll be able to watch the process from start to finish.
