There’s one thing they’re not short of in New York State during the winter, and that’s snow. The two hundred and fifty inches of crystallised water, on average, that fall around Chautauqua Lake is something the members of the Chautauqua Lake Snowmobile Club are waiting for every year with baited breath.

When snowmobiling season starts, which can be anytime from late November onwards, these guys are out there grooming the trails around Mayville and turning the countryside into a snowmobile playground. They only stop whizzing around to roast hot dogs on bonfires or organise an ice castle extravaganza and then they’re off again making the most of it. Who can blame them because the one thing that snow has an annoying habit of doing is – melting.
