Camping Duinoord Webcam on Ameland

If you were under the impression that the Netherlands, the country renowned for its tulips, windmills, clogs and cheese, was almost completely flat you wouldn’t be far wrong. For that reason, this campsite view may well leave you pondering. This feed isn’t streaming from the Dutch mainland though. Duinoord Camping is located on the island of Ameland and, as you can see for yourself, it has anything but a totally flat topography. Take a closer look and you’ll see that what this campsite nestles between are not hills or mountains, but huge sand dunes.

Ameland is a sixty square kilometre patch of land which forms part of the West Frisian archipelago. Surrounded in some parts by the Wadden Sea and in others by the frigid North Sea, it’s not difficult to discern why this is a summertime vacation location only. Or why it’s one of only five of the West Frisian, often called the Wadden Islands, that’s inhabited. During the chillier months of the year, when the campsites are deserted, the island’s population diminishes to around four thousand. Those hardy folk reside in one or the other of only four villages on the island.

What you can’t see on this cam is the incredible stretch of unspoilt beach that lines the coastline behind those dunes. Unless it’s peak holiday season, you’re more likely to spot a seal basking on the sands than you are a tourist in skimpy swimwear. Not surprisingly that beach is one of the island’s main attractions unless you’re an avid birdwatcher. Arrive in Ameland by ferry and you’ll be whipping out your binoculars before you’ve even left the harbour. Over sixty different species of avifauna reside or make migratory visits to Ameland so there’s never a shortage of something to spot. If you’re more into escaping from it all, whatever it all may be, then Duinoord Camping might just be the place to do it.
