Can miracles really happen? Who knows, but the pilgrims who make their way to Altötting, a town in south-west Germany, believe they might.

In the Kapellplatz in Altötting is the Chapel of Grace. Kept there is a golden statue of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus which is reputed to have healing powers. It’s Germany’s most visited shrine and receives over a million visitors every year. When the hoped for doesn’t happen, restoration can always be found with a Bavarian beer or a Bavarian coffee and a sweet flädle or two.
