On a day when the sun is shining, this view could be just about any harbour in a Mediterranean location, but it’s not. This live feed is streaming from Jackson’s Bay, a natural inlet on the south coast of Wales and that water isn’t the Med, it’s the somewhat chillier waters of the Bristol Channel. Chilly water or not, it’s a popular spot where boating fanatics from the town of Barry’s Yacht Club moor up when they’re not out sailing. While those yachts lying at anchor create a serene scene, it’s quite a deceptive one as Barry itself is anything but peaceful.

Barry is a bustling seaside town renowned for its amusement park, the Barry Island Pleasure Park. The park, located on Barry Island – a place which was once an island but no longer is – is the central feature of the town’s resort area. Some, if not all, of the park’s extreme, scream-worthy thrill rides would probably have St Baruc, the Welsh saint the town is named after, turning in his grave if he knew about them. Is there anything else to do in Barry other than stand on the waterfront perusing the view of yachts in the bay you can’t afford or shriek until you’re hoarse on an amusement ride? Yes, there is.

While it may not have year-round sunshine, it’s not as damp as its northern neighbour, Scotland so getting a stroll along its stunning beach is always a possibility. You can take a hike along the coastal paths to go seagull spotting. You can also go seagull spot in the town if you prefer. All you’ll need is a bag of chips and it won’t be long before they make an appearance. The local seagulls’ addiction to chips, seasoned with salt and vinegar, could well be one of the reasons why there’s not many to be seen soaring across the skies about the yachts on this feed. Still, that could be a bonus where keeping the decks shipshape and free of avian excretions falling out of the blue is concerned.
