Kópavogur Port Cams

When viewing this live feed streamed by ipcamlive from Kópavogur in southwest Iceland, you may start to question why it’s titled port. Yes, on this view it does look more like a marina where the local boaters keep their weekend toys, but look closer and you’ll spot the larger ships in the background. And as it’s the busiest port in the country after the port in Reykjavik, the capital, there will be something ship-wise to see.  

Before heavy duty maritime traffic took over this coastal location it was a habitat for seals and the name, Kópavogur, means seal pup bay when roughly translated from Icelandic to English. While bathing seals might have been an interesting addition to this cam, the constant movement of cargo ships and ferries heading in and out of this Atlantic Ocean port have pretty much forced them to find newer grounds. The seals, while no longer bobbing about in the bay waters, are still remembered though and are represented on the town’s coat of arms.  

According to statistics, Kópavogur has a population of around forty-thousand. That makes it the second most populous after the capital which it borders. Those figures could be well adrift though if local legends are true. Huldufólk, elves that live in a different dimension, are said to inhabit Kópavogur and the surrounding countryside. Sadly, spotting any of those on this live feed is about as likely as spotting a seal so you’ll just have to make do with the boats.
