Hammelburg Panorama Webcam

If you had to guess the location of the view on this webcam, without cheating and peeking at the title, you’d probably be hard put to decide exactly where it was.  Those houses nestled among the sweeping green fields could be in England, France or any other European country come to that. If you click in and it’s foggy or mizzling with rain, you may even be led to believe you’re viewing a swath of Irish countryside through the haze. You’re not. This is, as the title says, Hammelburg in Germany.

Hammelburg is a town in the Bavarian region of central Germany with a history that dates back to the early 8th century. Remnants of those long ago medieval times such as the city walls still serve the same purpose. Thankfully other historical structures, mainly Stalag XIII-C, a WW2 prison camp, have been recommissioned for better use. During the war, prisoners at the camps would be tasked to work on the land as this area around the Franconian Saale River is exceptionally fertile.

While back then food production was all important, and still is, what Hammelburg has become known for are its vineyards. Yes, you read that correctly. Forget beer in this part of Bavaria, it’s grapes rather than hops that take precedence. If you’re looking for a new wine-oriented destination to visit then you may well have hit the jackpot with Hammelburg as it’s considered to be one of the oldest wine regions in the country. Go on a vineyard tour here and you’ll be sampling some of the very best Riesling and Pinot Noir to be had anywhere in Germany. And if that doesn’t sound like a good idea to you, you’re probably checking out the wrong webcam.
