Alaska and beaches are not usually two words that are commonly associated with one another. But it’s a well known geographical fact that all islands, including Raspberry Island in Alaska, have a coastline and along that coastline there will be the probability of encountering some sort of sandy or pebble-strewn shore. Whether or not this patch of picturesque littoral should be defined as a beach is something you’ll have to decide for yourself.

Raspberry Island is a twenty-nine kilometre long, almost road-free stretch of land in the Gulf of Alaska that’s a true wilderness. While it’s not a no-man’s land, it is practically uninhabited except for the folks who own and manage the get-away-from-it-all vacation lodge and the fishermen, hikers and kayakers who visit them. And let’s face it, whether the view on this feed is technically a beach or not, an hour or more sitting in one of those chairs on the waterfront while forgetting about the rest of the world and its inhabitants wouldn’t be anything other than a good thing – sand or no sand.

There is more wildlife on Raspberry Island than there are people so if nature photography is your thing, you’d be in your element here. Among the island’s resident critters you’d spot bears, foxes, elk and muskrats while along the coast or canoeing down the strait, sea otters, sea lions, porpoise and whales. If you’re tired of the human race, this may well be a place you’ll want to add to your must-visit bucket list as you’re more likely to see a bald eagle here than a bald head.
