Grassy Key Webcams

When you first see the name Grassy Key, it may well lead you mentally astray. If your imagination sprouts images of a verdant piece of land surrounded by water, your imagination will be way off. Why this mini island in Florida was blessed with the name Grassy Key in the early 20th century is anyone’s guess. That said, it worked well as far as marketing the island as a tourist destination went even though there’d probably never been a blade of the green stuff growing there.

Take a look at the first cam in this collection and you won’t see a well-trimmed lawn anywhere. You’ll be transported instead to the jungle-like terrace of the Lagoon Bar. It’s so realistically done, a tiger strolling up to the bar to get itself a beer wouldn’t look too out of place. If sea views are more to your taste than palm trees, wilting bougainvillea, sun-bleached picnic tables and the odd striped surfboard, you’ll love cam number two.

Grassy Key isn’t all about tourists drinking sundowners in an exotic location. This Florida key has a more serious side to it. The lagoons around this four square kilometres of land in the Florida Straits are home to a specialised Dolphin Research Centre. In operation since the late 1950s, under the care of various owners, the centre studies the behaviour of these amazing aquatic mammals as well as serving as a rescue centre. While details of their findings are too lengthy to go into here, guaranteed, the one thing they probably discovered is – dolphins are a lot smarter than humans are.
