The village of Bald Head Island is located on a barrier island cut off from the bulk of the state of North Carolina by the serpentine Cape Fear River. For the general public, residents and visitors alike, it’s only accessible by ferry or private boat. Not surprisingly, its permanent population numbers less than three-hundred. The lack of human occupation and wildlife-friendly terrains which include marshlands, lagoons and maritime forests means the area is a haven for migrating birds. Its beaches are also well-established nesting grounds for sea turtles.

With every good there’s always a bad. Although they’re not as overly abundant as they are in the bayous of Louisiana, there are enough alligators present to put anyone off from refreshing their toes in the lagoon waters after a hike. The one-hundred and eight steps it takes to get to the top of Old Baldy, the island’s early 19th century-built lighthouse, definitely doesn’t discourage people from going up it though. The view of the island from the top is apparently outstanding and well worth getting out of breath for. On this live feed, what you’ll see is dunes, the ocean and parked up golf carts, the only form of transport, apart from bicycles and shank’s pony, allowed on the island.
