The Netherlands is a country in northwestern Europe bordering Belgium, Germany and the North Sea. The capital city is the historic Amsterdam, known for its cobbled streets, tall, narrow houses and canals. The seat of government is actually in the Hague and the monarch is Queen Beatrix.
The country is often called Holland and the language spoken is Dutch.
