Unless you’re a dedicated geologist or an avid digital birdwatcher, you might not find this live feed of the Farallon Islands streamed by the California Academy of Sciences in the least bit captivating.

The Farallon Islands are a series of craggy rocks poking up out of the Gulf of Farallon off the coast of San Francisco. While the islands have been used and abused historically, think nuclear waste dumping and Prohibition days rum-running, they’re now a wildlife refuge for seals and seabirds. When you want some added excitement keep your eye on the coastline. If you’re lucky you may well spot a whale breaching or even a great white shark surfing in search of a seal for lunch. If you’re not fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of any of those then you’ll just have to make do with the waves crashing against the shore.
