Texas is the second largest state in the United States after Alaska. Some of the largest cities in the US are found in this southern state including the capital Austin; the largest, Houston; Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio. Its proximity to Mexico shows in its Tex-Mex cuisine and culture as Mexico controlled the territory until 1836. Oil discoveries in the early 1900s began an economic boom and today the state is a leader in export revenue.
