Merapi Volcano on Yogyakarta

Mount Merapi is a ten thousand foot high stratovolcano near the city of Yogyakarta in western Indonesia that has erupted at regular intervals for the last five hundred years.

Mount Merapi might be the most active volcano in the country, but that hasn’t stopped people building their homes on its steep-sided slopes. When it frequently makes its presence known by causing rumbling volcanic earthquakes, the residents of Yogyakarta and the surrounding villages wisely head for safer ground. That’s a sensible move as the earthquakes are often a signal that the volcano is about to blow its top once more as it did in 2018 and 2021.
