The Republic of Georgia lies to the south of Russia and borders the Black Sea. Newly independent from the Soviet Union in 1991 its capital city is Tbilisi and the currency is the Lari. It is divided east from west by the Likhi Mountains and the highest mountain is Mount Shkhara at 5201m (17059 feet) which puts the UK’s Ben Nevis at 700m (2300 feet) literally in the shade!
