Iceland is a well-named island in the North Atlantic Ocean just south of the Arctic Circle. The capital and largest city is Reykjavik, which means ‘Smoky Bay’. The landscape is governed by its volcanic activity with rugged mountains, glacial rivers, lakes and thermal spas spread over the tundra landscape. There are many geysers which spurt hot water into the air every 10 minutes or so. In fact the geothermal power has been harnessed to provide cheap hot water and home heating in this cold climate.
It is known as the ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’ in the summer but has many hours of darkness during the winter. Our Iceland Webcams capture what’s happening in this Nordic country.
Although it was considered one of the wealthiest and most developed countries in the world, in 2008 its banking system failed, causing economic contraction.
