Israel is on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea and is the world’s only predominantly Jewish state. It has 7.5 million people. It history and religious roots are strongly linked to the Old Testament and despite many peace agreements, conflict over its land continues. Tel Aviv is the financial centre of the country but the ancient city of Jerusalem is the capital and largest city.
Israel is just 290 miles (470km) by 85 miles (135km) and includes the Negev desert, mountain ranges, the Jordan Rift Valley and the coastal plains where 70% of the population live. It remains one of the most advanced countries in southwest Asia. Tourism is an important part of its industry with over 3 million tourists visiting the historic architecture, religious sites and beaches.
