Independence Square is the enormous plaza in Montevideo that provides a breathing space amid the city’s mass urbanization as well as acting as a border line between neighborhoods. At the center of the square is a statue and memorial of one of Uruguay’s most famous Gaucho heros, José Gervasio Artigas, who freed the city from both British and Brazilian occupation.
