This east coast state rises from the Atlantic Ocean to the peak of Mount Mitchell at 6684 feet. The state’s slogan is ‘First in Flight’ referring to the success of the Wright brothers who achieved liftoff in their first ever powered flight in 1903. The inaugural flight is marked with a Memorial, close to the original site at Kill Devil Hill.
The Outer Banks barrier islands are some of the most beautiful stretches of beaches and unspoilt coastline in the US. Cape Hatteras is marked by its famous lighthouse, the largest ever to be moved due to sea erosion.
