The Slovak Republic was part of the former Czechoslovakia in Eastern Europe. This EU member state has 5 million population in a country of 49,000 km2 (19,000 square miles). The highest peak is the Gerlachovsky Stit which is 2655m high and is near the town of Poprad. Ice hockey is widely played here and in 2002 it won the World Championship. It is also a popular ski destination as its high mountain ranges and cold climate create ideal winter sports conditions.
