Vanuatu consists of more than 80 islands, most of which are volcanic in origin, which lie in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Europeans began settling the islands in the 18th century and France and Britain jointly administered the country until its independence in 1980. The capital city is Port Villa and the currency is the Vanu. The national dish is lap-lap, a vegetable porridge cooked in coconut milk and the traditional drink in kava, which is a mild sedative used in western herbal medicine to counter anxiety.
