Uruguay is on the southeastern coast of South America between Argentina and Brazil. The capital city, Montevideo, lies just north of Buenos Aires across the Rio de la Plata and is a busy port. Most of its 3.3 million residents are of European descent with many Italian and Spanish immigrants settling here in the late 19th century. It has a temperate climate with warm to hot summers and mild winters. Frost is common but snow is rare.
