Jackson is the capital and largest city of this southern state. Mississippi sits on the mighty Mississippi River, the largest in the US. It is a major transport route, but is also the cause of occasional flooding, despite its levees. Mississippi was a great cotton growing area and its huge plantations had many black slave workers. The state still has the largest proportion of African Americans in the US.
Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi and the state is well known for its gospel music, country music, jazz and R&B which eventually found their way north to Chicago.
