Jackson is the capital and largest city of this southern state. Mississippi sits on the mighty Mississippi River, the largest in the US. It is a major transport route, but is also the cause of occasional flooding, despite its levees. Mississippi was a great cotton growing area and its huge plantations had many black slave workers. The state still has the largest proportion of African Americans in the US.|
Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi and the state is well known for its gospel music, country music, jazz and R&B which eventually found their way north to Chicago.
One of the state’s most beautiful towns is Natchez, which has more than 500 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.
