One of the wonders of the world is the Panama Canal which takes ships effortlessly from the Caribbean to the Pacific, cutting 4500 miles and many days off their alternative journey around South America. Completed in the early 1900s it was one of the most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken and cost thousands of lives to malaria, yellow fever and mudslides.
