Essex is one of the most densely populated areas in England. Located between London and the North Sea, it is perhaps best known for its busy Stansted airport which continues to offer budget flights to sunnier climes. Once known as the ancient Kingdom of Essex, the county town is Chelmsford.|
Small medieval towns still show the ancient industries kept alive here including thatching, weaving and saffron growing. Chelmsford once led the country in a technological revolution when Marconi established the world’s first radio factory here. To keep things simple, most of the coastal towns have the suffix “on-Sea” in their names including Clacton and Southend, which incidentally is home to the longest pier in the world!
