A webcam of the crater of the White Island volcano shows the haunting landscape inside the crater. But curiously it also streams a toy dinosaur, Dino from the Flintstones, that has mysteriously placed in the crater.
White Island is located off the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Sulphur mining was attempted on White Island, but was abandoned in 1914 after ten workers were killed. Since then it has mainly been used as a tourist attraction and for scientific research.
Dino has been inside the crater since 2004. Volcanologist Michael Rosenburg is tight lipped on how the toy got into the crater, but did let slip that he was originally bought in a garage sale.
There is some surprise that Dino is till standing after all these years. He has been exposed to strong winds, ash, high levels of UV light, hydrochloric acid, and sulphuric acid. It is one sturdy toy dinosaur!
Dino was originally attached to a concrete wall at the old sulphur works, but when that collapsed both Dino and the webcam were moved.
