Webcams Show Where Not to Go

Reading national newspapers it seems that many people want to live somewhere else. Is it a matter of “the other man’s grass is always greener” or are there really better places in the world to live than Blighty? Recent reports calculate that 200,000 young people are leaving their rural roots behind to seek fame, fortune, entertainment and the internet in big cities. However, finding a job may not be as easy as it once was, and affordable accommodation may prove more expensive than the basic minimum wage will allow in many cities.

Meanwhile one British citizen leaves the country every three minutes, and I don’t mean on holiday. Retirees are using their new found freedom to move to a country where a fixed retirement income may go a lot further than in the UK, and with guaranteed sunshine to boot. France, Spain, Costa Rica, Panama and Mexico are all highly rated by International Living magazine for offering a high quality of life and good, affordable medical services. The reality is that many find living in a country which does not have English as a first language has its problems, and distance from family and friends takes its toll.

Webcams offer a great way to take a look at what’s going on and “look before you leap” as it were. For example, who wants to go to China after reports of the longest traffic jam in the world this week? Apparently a 60-mile tailback three lanes wide ran from the capital, Beijing, to the northern province of Inner Mongolia. And it wasn’t even a sunny August bank holiday!

The speed of traffic was measured at 2 miles PER DAY and enterprising locals were making a fortune selling water and snack food to bored, thirsty and hungry drivers. If you want to take a look at life in other parts of China, checkout this greener view at Pine Valley golf resort in Beijing, or see what’s happening live outside the Civic and Municipal buildings in Macau. Great views of Hong Kong’s vertical city can be seen here.

Best make use of those live traffic cams before setting off with a picnic to some of Britain’s beauty spots on Bank Holiday weekend, especially the A38 trafficam on the Tamar Bridge approach into Cornwall. And definitely do your webcam homework before thinking of moving abroad. Things may not be all they’re cracked up to be.
