Sunset Webcams at Key West: The Most Southerly City in the US

January 29th, 2010 by Gill

I have just returned from completing one of the world’s 20 greatest drives. Across the Kalahari Desert? To the North Pole á la Jeremy Clarkson? Maybe over Hardnott Pass in Cumbria, reputedly Britain’s steepest road? No, thankfully not. I have just driven the 127 miles down Highway 1 from Miami to Key West.

This amazing road bridge hops from island to island from the south of mainland Florida out into the Atlantic Ocean, crossing no less then 42 bridges. As you can imagine, driving at almost sea level, the views of sandy cays, bobbing boats and colourful painted wooden houses beneath shady palm trees was just amazing. With a speed limit often at just 30mph on the two-lane road the journey took over 3 hours and when I arrived I was actually closer to Cuba than I was to Miami!

Thought you might like to share some of the spectacular goings on in this amazing city. Mallory Square is the place to gather to celebrate the sunset. Grab a long colourful “Planter’s Punch” cocktail and watch the entertainers. Fire eaters, human statues and a collection of street performers turn the crowded square into an impromptu circus, particularly the guy who had trained domestic cats to perform tricks like circus big cats! Checkout what’s happening tonight at the Mallory Square webcam.

The sun sets in Key West’s generally cloudless sky around 6.30pm local time, so that’s around 11.30pm UK time.

The most popular bar in Key West is Sloppy Joe’s, the former haunt of Ernest Hemingway. It is rumoured that Hemingway only found his way home by looking for the lighthouse light, as he lived right across the road from it! You can see the live entertainment night and day on Sloppy Joe’s webcam.

In total there are more than 40 live webcams around Key West, so if you have never visited this colourful and unique Caribbean-style outpost, see what you’re missing through these Key West webcams.
