Years ago, I met a native from Washington DC and asked him when the best time would be to visit his home town. His immediate reply caught me by surprise, “End of March, early April” he assured me.
My first thoughts were whether the snow had even cleared from this semi-northern capital city, but apparently it usually has. With the thawing temperatures the blossom trees which Washington is famous for, begin to show their colour in late March and shower the streets with delicate petals.
The Washingtonians are so proud of their cherry blossom that they have an Annual National Cherry Blossom Festival which runs from 27 March to 11 April, 2010. They even have a dedicated Cherry Blossom Webcam so the rest of the world can enjoy this beautiful spectacle.
It celebrates the coming of spring in grand style and commemorates the gift of 3,000 cherry trees given to the city by Japan in 1912. Many of the trees were planted in the tidal basin in West Potomac Park and have since thrived.
A further 3,800 trees were given in 1965 to complete the gorgeous spectacle all over the city. The highlight of the week is the parade on the last Saturday on the Festival.
You can see these lovely trees from some of the live Washington DC webcams scattered all around the city, particularly along Constitution Ave and the Mall.
