Market Town Ashbourne Gets Webcam

June 26th, 2012 by Mark

A new webcam from Ashbourne in Derbyshire, UK allows anyone to see the goings on of their town centre. Ashbourne is a market town that is a common stopping point for those who are looking to explore the Peak District.

Another bustling day in Ashbourne.

Ashbourne is famous for its Royal Shrovetide football match. The game takes place for two whole days and uses the entire town for its pitch. The goals are three miles apart, and several thousand players from the town play using the cork-filled ball. There are few rules and the game moves across fields, roads, and even rivers!

It is thought that the game has been played annually for over 1,000 years. There have been attempts to ban the game, but so far they have been unsuccessful.

You can check out the Ashbourne webcam here. The Olympic torch will be passing the webcam sometime on Friday 29 June, so be sure to tune in then! (Or you can watch the Olympic torch webcam itself.)
