Since 17-year-old Andrey Ternovskiy created Chatroulette, it has become a big hit. It has create some memorable videos, such as Merton’s Piano Chat Improv, which in turn inspired Ben Folds to pay homage to Merton. Many famous people have been on Chatroulette, Lady Gaga and Paris Hilton being just two examples.

While those aspects of Chatroulette have really let the webcam shine, it’s no secret that the website has developed a reputation for not being for the faint of heart. As many as 1 in 10 video chat partners can be either nude or masturbating. This minority of users have damaged the website’s brand and been spoiling the fun.
However, that is set to change. With the site losing some of its popularity due to that minority of users, Ternovskiy has decided it’s time that Chatroulette cleaned up its act.
Chatroulette already has given users the ability to flag a user. If one user gets flagged three times within five minutes, they will be temporarily banned. Now they also plan to add software that will be able to detect and ban users who display their genitals, effectively nipping the problem in the bud.
Whether the new measures will work is yet to be seen, but it seems that if Chatroulette is to survive, it must change quickly. With many angel investors said to be interested in investing in the website, Ternovskiy may have a large financial motivation to do so.
