Fancy watching two young pandas playing in China? Explore.org, a website created to inspire people to protect endangered species, has set up a giant panda webcam that allows you to do just that.

The website was created by the philanthropist Charlie Annenberg Weingarten, and features webcams of many different endangered animals. Other animals include jellyfish, whales, puppies, and reef fish. It has proved to be a popular website amongst animal fans.

Yummy! Bamboo! And so much of it!

The quest to get giant pandas on webcam when Weingarten visited China back started in 2008. Unfortunately, an earthquake hit the region soon afterwards, delaying any plans. When Weingarten was able to get back in contact with those looking after the pandas in China, they agreed to allow webcams to be installed with the aim of increasing awareness and understanding about the species.

There are only currently 1300 pandas in existence. Fingers crossed that webcams like this one and the one at Edinburgh Zoo raise interest in the species and increase the population!

You can check out the webcam here. The webcam plays old webcam footage when it isn’t live.

Since being installed last summer, a webcam at Cape Forchu has had almost had 250,000 views, and looking at the webcam it’s easy to understand why. The stunning view features shows the coast, a 75 feet high lighthouse, and a rather oddly placed deck chair!

Cape Forchu is a fishing community in Nova Scotia, Canada. It has a population of less than 100, but as this webcam shows, a small population doesn’t mean bad scenery!

An extremely weird place to put a deck chair. Why would anyone want to sit there?!

Nova Scotia has been the host of many webcams featured here on Camscape. Most notably is probably the lobster webcam, which is still proving to be popular.

The Cape Forchu webcam has been well cared for. During Halloween it featured a 500-pound pumpkin, and the Christmas it featured a Christmas tree made up of 28 lobster pots. There are also plans for decorations on St. Valentine’s Day, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled!

You can check out the webcam here.

Having recently given birth to two cubs on 16 January, black bear Lugnut now has her own webcam. It has been set up inside her den by the Maine Department of Fisheries and Wildlife and the Wildlife Research Foundation.

The webcam has had 78,000 people tune in within the four weeks since it went live. With 15,000 of those viewers coming in its first two weeks, it seems the popularity of this webcam is exploding!

Lugnut appears to have just woken up. Yes -- that's a yawn.

Webcams and black bears giving birth seems to be a popular combination recently. We report last month on the pregnant black bear Jewel. On 22 January, she successfully gave birth to a litter of at least two cubs. You can see footage of the birth here.

Lugnut’s webcam will stay live until spring arrives, when the two cubs will start to venture outside the den.

You can check out Lugnut’s den webcam on the Wildlife Research Foundation website.

Mila, an Icelandic telecommunications company, maintains 13 different webcams, all showing fantastic views from Iceland. If you are thinking of starting your own webcam, take note! The high-quality streams and the scenic landscapes are great examples of what you can do with a webcam.

With so many great webcams, I had trouble selecting one to show!

Regular Camscape readers might remember Mila’s New Years Eve webcam in Reykjavik that we featured last year. Over the holiday period, that webcam had over 200,000 visitors eager to see the fireworks.

At the time of writing, the cold and snowy weather is making Mila’s webcams even more picturesque! I particularly recommend the Blue Lagoon webcam and the Gullfoss webcam.

You can check out a full list of the Icelandic webcams here.

Way back in 1927, Prof. Thomas Parnell from the University of Queensland set up an experiment to show how some materials have strange and intriguing properties. The Pitch Drop Experiment demonstrates how pitch, a derivative of tar, despite appearing solid at room temperature, is actually a liquid. It’s just a very slow-moving liquid! You can now watch this experiment on webcam.

While the substance can be broken easily with a hammer, the experiment shows the pitch dripping down from a funnel into a beaker. It took eight years for first drop of pitch to hit the beaker. 80 years later, the ninth drop is only now starting to form.

An interesting fact about the experiment is that in the 80 years it has run, nobody has actually seen one of the drips hit the beaker. This webcam is sure to change this!

That drop is going to hit the beaker any year now!

You can check out the webcam on this webpage. You need to scroll down a little to see the webcam.

The two gerbils’ names when translated from Dutch mean milk and dark chocolate. I’m guessing the owner of this webcam is a milk chocolate fan!

One of the gerbils decends towards the green wheel. Exercise time!

You can be assured that the two of them are well looked after, with a nice home, a green wheel to run in if they want some exercise, and of course lots of fresh sawdust. Puur in particular does enjoy using the green wheel.

You can check out the two gerbils here. They aren’t always visible on the webcam, so if you’re having no luck, you can also check out the GerbilCam YouTube channel.

In Wisconsin, petitions to recall Gov. Scott Walker are being processed for all to see on webcam. Perplexingly, tens of thousands of people have decided to tune in to what is an incredibly boring webcam.

Here at Camscape, we like to think we feature lots of interesting webcams, many of which get far less views on the recall petition webcam we are featuring today. Alas! Maybe we don’t understand webcam fans as much as we thought!

Why do so many people want to watch this?!

We have already noted how webcams have been increasingly used to stream ballot counting online. It seems this trend of more government accountability webcams is not only continuing, but they are also becoming popular!

It was two years ago when the Internet was abuzz to see black bear Lily from from the North American bear Center in Ely give birth to a baby cub Hope. We here at Camscape posted again in early 2011 when Lily was expected to give birth again.

But now it’s not Lily who is expecting, but her younger sister Jewel. She is expected to give birth any day now. The upcoming birth is expected to draw thousands of webcam viewers, maybe even more than the 25,000 people that watched Lily give birth two years ago. A team of nearly 100 people are watching the webcams all day every day to record data on the bears, and I’m sure that the upcoming birth is drawing their special attention.

Jewel seems to be resting. The North American bear Center’s website also has two other webcams, one featuring Lily and Faith, and the other featuring Honey and Lucky.
