I’m always looking for ways to keep Camscape fresh and current and are rolling out a couple of new things so you know we’re always listing up to date webcams.

First – we’re improving how we find up to date images of the cams – so soon enough we should have snapshots for nearly every single one! Second – we now check every day whether any of the links to the cam’s source pages have moved or gone missing (something that nearly 1500 people who own the cam sites can do and is out of our control!) – so you won’t have to report a broken cam as often.

Things always come and go in the space of just 24 hours – many sites go up and down and things jiggle about – but for what we are, I think we now do a pretty good job of maintaining our directory.

Thanks for using Camscape! If you know of any cams we don’t have listed, it’s simply a case of sending one in here!

I’ve noticed that our weathercam has proved quite popular lately, so decided to play about to see what kind of quality I could get out of it. The result is our rather larger than usual HQ Weather Cam Page!

The camera is a standard definition device, so its maximum resolution is 640×480. The best feed I got from it was using its native MPEG4 @ 30 frames per second. This is seperate from the other, smaller feed, which Camscape still shows here – that uses the camera’s 320×240 MJPEG output. It’s a tiny bit jerky which is why the MPEG4 was used for this bigger version.

Y-Cam, the camera’s manufacturers are not far off launching an HD version of the cam we’re using, so I’m going to save up when the time comes and hopefully you’ll get a view even more pleasant on the site this year.

Enjoy!

It was about time we had a close look at our latest webcam submissions to add to the site. Nothing better on a Sunday afternoon than a little virtual trip around the world!

A great batch of 19 cams ended up being added today which you can see here.

If you’ve got a cam or know one we don’t have, submit it here – we’re very proud that only the best cams get onto Camscape. So if you submit, don’t worry if we don’t add it right away – we want to know the cam isn’t going to disappear overnight, so give it time to prove its worth. The new ones which we could pull images from will start collecting a little archive over the course of the next day, which we’ve found since launching is a lovely way to see how a view was in case the cam ever goes down temporarily.

We hope you enjoy looking too, and continue to enjoy our cams!

As is customary, some new cams were added to our directory today.

It’s lovely to see people adding some great cams, and we’re really enjoying seeing them looking brighter and better in the new Camscape look and feel. It’s also nice that people are tweeting, ‘Liking’ and sharing the cams so much more readily than before. Today we even have a couple of firsts in Cambodia and Kuwait which is nice to see.

If you missed it, more info about Camscape’s recent makeover is here.

When you have a browse of the directory, it’s clear there are some countries which still have zero cams (you can’t click those). If you know of one, or indeed own one in that location, please add it for us to have a look at and possibly put up on the site.

Enjoy!

Updated 28 April, 2011

It might not have escaped your attention that Camscape has had a bit of an overhaul. (Browse the cams here) Let me tell you what we’ve introduced and what it means for the site.

Firstly, we are now presenting each webcam snapshot within its own page and keeping a ‘running archive’ of their images. At present, new images are looked for every 4 hours and we store 7 snapshots. Quite often, the image doesn’t change as some webcams are only updated once a day, so you may see a longer than expected ‘Updated’ time below the image.

You might see a single snapshot and the words “Preview Pic Only.” – The reasons for this can be one or more of: the cam is not compatible with our archiving system, e.g. if it’s the wrong format or the filename changes with every new picture so we can’t track it, or the webcam owner may have asked us not to save copies of their cam, in which case we have turned that off for them.

Also if you happen to come across a “No webcam picture” image, it’s because when we went to check the cam image, it was down or had disappeared. We’ll work on correcting as many of them as possible.

Because of the nature of webcams – there are different formats they can present themselves in – this first version of the new Camscape looks only for ‘jpg’ pictures. In future, we will hopefully be able to find all different types of webcams so there’s not so many missing snapshots.

You can of course still visit the source of the webcam by clicking each picture.

The second feature is commenting. Long awaited, it allows you to express yourself about each and every cam. Recent commented webcams appear at the bottom of the front page now.

Thirdly, we have brought social media a bit more to the fore on the site – you can ‘Like’ and ‘Tweet’ your favourites to your friends.

Forth, each cam has our ‘Camscape Bar’ along the top now, to make it easy for you to skip back to the thumbnails or category, or indeed to Like/Tweet the cam.

Fifth, as of April 25th, we launched two extra navigation improvements – ‘Movers & Shakers’ and ‘Good Cams Near/Like This’:

Movers & Shakers is a list which you’ll see on the Homepage and has its own page too, comprising the top 5 (or 20 in the bigger list) webcams which are topical right now. I’m trying to avoid saying ‘Popular’ or ‘Hit on’, because the algorithm which determines which cams appear on that list is a bit cleverer than that – we take into account all sorts of factors before scoring a cam for a particular timeframe – so hopefully this list will reflect the idea of ‘Trending’ like Twitter shows.

The ‘Good Cams Near/Like This’ (Or ‘Greenie’ as I termed it during development!) is a small (up to 5) list of highly rated cams which are in the same category as the webcam you are looking at, making skipping between different cams a bit more enjoyable than clicking ‘back!’.

We’re constantly looking at how to improve the site further and hope you enjoy the recent changes.

Just a quickie. Thanks to all your notices and behind the scenes work from Gill and me, finally our cams have had a complete go-through and any utterly out of date (say more than a couple of months) and broken cams have been removed from Camscape. Any which have carried on at other websites have been updated to reflect that.

Doesn’t sound like a big job, but going through 1500 links is surprisingly long winded. We could automate it, but to be absolutely sure, everything needs checking by hand – i.e. we can’t see if something’s out of date, or the webcam itself could have just vanished.

So, now our lovely site full of webcams is completely up to date. Saying that, we started the tidy up some time ago – so it’s wholly possible things have moved a bit. If you spot a dead link, let me know!

Thanks! And enjoy!
